How the fit score is built

A score is four signals compared against the posting you are looking at, not a general rating of your resume. The same resume scores differently on two roles with the same title.

Skill overlap
Tools, languages, and domain terms that appear in both your resume and the posting. Exact names count more than synonyms because most ATS keyword filters are literal.
Seniority match
Your scope and years against the level the posting implies. A strong senior profile can score down on a staff role, and vice versa.
Must-have coverage
Requirements written as hard gates — a specific certification, a framework, a clearance. Missing one of these outweighs a long list of nice-to-haves.
Risk flags
Clear mismatches worth seeing before you spend the application: location or work-authorization conflicts, a domain you have never worked in, a level gap of more than one step.

The full weighting and its known blind spots are on the fit score methodology page.

A worked example

Take a backend engineer with four years of Python and Django, some AWS, and no Kubernetes, looking at a mid-level platform role that asks for Python, Kubernetes, Terraform, and on-call experience.

  • Scored high: Python and AWS appear in both, and four years lands inside the level the posting implies.
  • Flagged: Kubernetes and Terraform are written as must-haves, and neither appears on the resume.
  • What to do: if you have run containers in production and never wrote it down, fix the resume and rescore. If you genuinely have not, this is a stretch application — send it knowing that, or spend the slot on a closer role.

Most weak scores are one of those two cases: a real gap, or a gap that only exists on paper. The flags are there so you can tell them apart.

What a score does not mean

A high score does not predict an interview. It means you are worth prioritizing over the other twenty tabs open right now. Plenty of 90s go unanswered because the role was filled internally, the req was frozen, or someone had a referral.

A low score is also not a veto. It is a reason to check the posting again before spending time on it.

Where matching sits in the flow

  1. Match — score open roles against your resume and sort by fit.
  2. Tailor — rewrite the resume for the posting in the resume optimizer.
  3. Review — read every change. Nothing submits without your approval.
  4. Apply — fill the ATS form with auto-apply.

FAQ

How is the fit score calculated?
It weighs skill overlap, seniority match, and must-have coverage between your resume and the posting, then subtracts for risk flags like a level gap or a location conflict. Full detail is on the fit score methodology page.
Does a high fit score mean I will get an interview?
No. A score is a prioritization prior, not an interview prediction. Referrals, headcount freezes, internal candidates, and recruiter judgment still decide outcomes.
What is the difference between fit score, resume score, and ATS match?
Fit score compares you to one role. Resume score rates the document itself. ATS match estimates how well your resume parses and keyword-matches for a specific posting. They answer different questions and can disagree.
Can I see why a role was flagged as a weak fit?
Yes. Every score shows the overlap it found and the flags it raised, so you can decide whether the gap is real or just missing wording on your resume.
Is AI job matching free?
You can browse the jobs board and run a free ATS check without an account. Match scores against your saved resume need a free account.
How is AI Job Match different from Jobs AI?
Jobs AI is the search and discovery surface. AI Job Match is the scoring layer behind it — this page explains how a score is built and what it does not mean.
